Ground Drones on the Frontline: How Robots Are Reshaping Ukrainian Military Logistics

Роботизовані безпілотники на позиціях: Вплив новітніх технологій на військові перевезення в Україні.

Deploying Robotic Ground Systems in Combat

Junior Sergeant Serhii (Kutik) of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade has detailed the frontline use of robotic ground systems (RGS) for logistics. As the war in Ukraine evolves into a battle of technological innovation, unmanned systems are proving critical in both aerial and ground operations. This shift highlights a broader global trend towards unmanned and automated battlefield support.

Conventional logistics, once handled by armored vehicles or pickup trucks, are now impossible across many frontline sectors. In these conditions, robotic ground systems carry out vital tasks at the front. According to Serhii, his unit actively uses ground drones for a variety of missions:

  • Delivering food and supplies
  • Evacuating the wounded
  • Recovering the fallen
“Its primary mission is to reach a position and deliver everything the soldiers need. The robots are stationed a bit further from the contact line. And, of course, when an RGS is hit, it's very difficult to extract it from there and get it to a repair point.” - Serhii (Kutik)

Serhii also emphasizes that ground drones handle a massive workload: “It does a huge amount of work: logistics, delivering provisions and ammunition, evacuating the dead and wounded. It also goes directly to the forward edge: it brings in ammo and food, and brings our guys out. It essentially shoulders the main burden of supply.”

However, using these robotic systems comes with significant challenges. Serhii notes that 'there are times when evacuating the drones themselves is extremely difficult. You can't always get a vehicle in, and the sky isn't always an option either, because in the current realities of this war, enemy drones are a serious menace.' The enemy actively hunts these robotic complexes using their own drones, which greatly complicates their deployment and recovery.

The Role of Robotic Ground Systems in Modern Warfare

Robotic ground systems have become a crucial element of modern warfare, providing logistics and supporting troops on the frontline. However, their limited numbers and the dangers of the battlefield demand constant replenishment and adaptive usage strategies.

Amidst active combat in Ukraine, the deployment of technologies like robotic ground systems is becoming critically important for ensuring effective logistics and preserving soldiers' lives. Given that traditional supply methods are growing increasingly perilous, such innovations may prove decisive in contemporary conflicts. At the same time, the persistent threat from enemy drones underscores the need to develop new tactics and technologies to protect and effectively operate these systems on the battlefield.
