NB8 Summit Held in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with leaders from the Nordic and Baltic countries for an NB8 summit in Kyiv on February 24, 2024. The meeting, a significant show of solidarity, resulted in a joint declaration reaffirming their support for Ukraine against Russia's ongoing aggression and detailing specific commitments for military, financial, and energy assistance.
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, the NB8 nations have collectively provided Ukraine with over €42 billion in aid. Their contributions to the PURL mechanism totaled €1.4 billion in 2025, with planned military aid for 2026 estimated at approximately €12.5 billion. Furthermore, support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure for the winter and the remainder of the year amounts to at least €918 million.
Ukraine Recovery Conference Announced
The summit also announced that a Ukraine Recovery Conference will be held in Estonia in 2027. In their statement, the participants resolved to continue providing substantial military aid, ensuring energy supply, supporting recovery efforts, promoting international accountability for Russia, and backing Ukraine's path toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
This summit confirms the enduring commitment of the Nordic and Baltic countries to support Ukraine in its fight against aggression.
The scale of the financial and military assistance, coupled with the planned recovery conference, underscores the international community's long-term efforts to restore stability in the region. The summit participants also emphasized the necessity of holding Russia accountable, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the allies' dedication to supporting Ukraine not just immediately, but for the foreseeable future. The NB8 format represents a crucial bloc of staunch European supporters for Kyiv.
