NBU prepares new banknotes: why 2000 and 5000 hryvnias may be introduced into circulation

Новації у грошовій системі: чому в обіг можуть потрапити купюри номіналом 2000 та 5000 гривень.

Introduction of new banknotes in Ukraine

The National Bank of Ukraine plans to introduce new higher denomination banknotes into circulation, specifically 2000 and 5000 hryvnias. This decision is justified by changes in the economic situation that have affected the purchasing power of the hryvnia. A member of the Board of the Association of Taxpayers of Ukraine, Dmytro Oleksiienko, expressed the opinion that the introduction of higher denomination banknotes is necessary, noting that the current economic situation requires such changes.

Currently, the US dollar has reached a level of 42 hryvnias, indicating significant fluctuations in the exchange rate. Prices for goods have more than doubled since 2019, which has also influenced the need for new banknotes. A 1000 hryvnia bill, which in 2019 was equivalent to over 40 dollars, by December 2025 will have a purchasing power reduced to approximately 20 euros.

'I don't think that introducing the 2000 hryvnia bill into circulation will be of any significant benefit,' Dmytro Oleksiienko noted.

At the same time, the expert believes it would be more logical to introduce the 5000 hryvnia bill alongside the 2000, as it may more effectively respond to consumer needs. 'However, this definitely needs to be done in the coming years,' he emphasized.

Response to economic challenges

Thus, the introduction of new higher denomination banknotes is a response to the current challenges in the economy of Ukraine. Rising prices and declining purchasing power of the hryvnia force the NBU to consider the possibility of such changes in the monetary system. This issue is becoming particularly relevant in the context of modern economic realities.

The introduction of new higher denomination banknotes could be an important step in combating inflation and strengthening the national currency. Experts emphasize that despite the introduction of 2000 and 5000 hryvnia banknotes, it is also important to ensure economic stability and control inflationary processes in order not to lose the population's trust in the hryvnia. This could help not only to cope with current challenges but also to lay the foundations for a more stable economic future for Ukraine.
