Global Backing for Ukraine

During the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok, Andriy Pyshnyi, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), reaffirmed the unwavering international solidarity with Ukraine. Global partners remain committed to cooperation and firmly reject any easing of sanctions against Russia, illustrating a united international front in support of Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

“I do not sense any decline in the level of backing from our partners,” Pyshnyi stated.

He further emphasized, “Every conversation begins with their clear support for Ukraine and rejection of any softening of sanctions on Russia.”

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Pyshnyi stressed the critical role of utilizing frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s needs while underscoring the country’s responsibility to honor commitments and continue structural reforms to secure financial aid. He noted, “I see how this situation strengthens the resolve to rally around Ukraine.”

Attention was also drawn to emerging risks and opportunities linked to artificial intelligence (AI). While AI offers promising advancements, it also introduces systemic threats, including cyberattacks, vulnerabilities within the financial system, and potential existential shocks. Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian data centers highlight the urgent need to enhance banking continuity protocols. In response, the NBU is intensifying operational resilience testing and exploring the creation of a sovereign cloud infrastructure to bolster the protection of financial institutions.

Ukraine’s banking sector remains stable, showing continuous growth in lending for the third consecutive year. The share of non-performing loans has dropped to 11.5%, the lowest level recorded in 17 years. The NBU continues to focus on maintaining price stability and advancing reforms to unlock capital market infrastructure, which is vital for attracting private investment.

Pyshnyi’s statements at this global forum underscore the crucial importance of sustained international support for Ukraine, especially in the context of the ongoing war with Russia. The commitment of global partners could prove decisive in stabilizing Ukraine’s economy and advancing essential reforms. At the same time, evolving cyber threats and technological challenges require the National Bank to adapt its security strategies to maintain a resilient and reliable financial system.

For international observers, these developments highlight how Ukraine’s economic resilience is closely tied to consistent foreign backing and proactive adaptation to emerging technological risks.

As the National Bank of Ukraine continues to navigate the complexities of international support and economic reforms, understanding the broader context of these challenges is essential. Insights from the NBU's recent annual conference shed light on the economic shocks and trust factors that underpin Ukraine's global backing, providing further clarity on the path ahead for the nation's financial stability.
