Commemorative Coins Slated for 2026
Ukraine's National Bank has greenlit its 2026 commemorative coin program, centered on the 35th anniversary of the country's independence. As part of this milestone series, three distinct coins will be issued:
- A gold coin with a face value of 100 hryvnias;
- A silver coin with a face value of 20 hryvnias;
- A coin made of nickel silver with a face value of 5 hryvnias.
Official sales are scheduled to begin in August 2026.
Coin Specifications
The gold coin is struck from 900-fineness gold, containing a net precious metal weight of 31.1 grams (1 troy ounce). Its mintage is strictly capped at just 1,000 pieces.
“This coin is the centerpiece and most valuable item of the release. It will be minted from 900-fineness gold in the highest proof quality, featuring a mirror-like finish. The mintage will be severely limited to only 1,000 specimens, automatically making it an ultra-rare numismatic scarcity,” noted Radio Track.
The silver coin carries a face value of 20 hryvnias and a net weight of 62.2 grams. Like its gold counterpart, its mintage is also set at 1,000 pieces. Additionally, the National Bank plans to release a nickel silver coin with a face value of 5 hryvnias, with a much larger mintage reaching 75,000 units. Sales of these commemorative releases will follow the usual channels: the NBU's online numismatic store and authorized distributor banks.
The central bank continues to expand its patriotic-themed series, including the circulating 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' 10-hryvnia coin line, which recently added new issues dedicated to the Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. The design of the upcoming independence coin is being kept deliberately under wraps, a move that only fuels collector anticipation.
Issuing commemorative coins tied to major historical milestones highlights both the growing interest in numismatics within Ukraine and efforts to reinforce national identity and patriotism. The limited mintages of the gold and silver coins are likely to appeal to collectors and investors alike, potentially boosting the Ukrainian numismatic market. This coin series is expected to generate significant enthusiasm, particularly among those who value collectibles with deep historical resonance.
