Release of a new commemorative coin
The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the release of a new commemorative coin dedicated to Archangel Michael, with a denomination of 20 UAH. The coin will be made of 900 fineness gold, and its implementation will start in January 2026.
Design of the coin
The obverse of the coin will feature a stylized laurel wreath that complements the overall aesthetic appearance of the product. The reverse of the coin is adorned with an image of Archistratigus Michael, and stylized silhouettes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine soldiers are placed on both sides of him. Around the rim of the coin, there will be an inscription from Taras Shevchenko's poem 'Haydamaky'.
This release is not the only innovation from the National Bank, as the coin 'Spirit of Christmas' was previously presented. Moreover, the Verkhovna Rada supported draft law No. 14093, which proposes renaming the 'kopeck' to 'shag'.
The issuance of commemorative coins such as this emphasizes the significance of national symbolism and culture in Ukraine, and it may also contribute to the development of numismatic interest among citizens. The image of Archangel Michael, which holds significance in the history and religion of Ukraine, along with the presence of the Armed Forces soldiers, is perceived as an acknowledgment of their role in modern society. At the same time, the changes in the names of the coins indicate the evolution of the country's monetary system and its adaptation to modern realities.
