Launch of the New 2000 Hryvnia Banknote
National Bank of Ukraine Governor Andriy Pyshny has announced that a new 2000 hryvnia banknote will be released into circulation starting September 4, 2026. The note honors Vasyl Stus, a renowned Ukrainian poet, reflecting the nation’s commitment to commemorating its cultural luminaries.
The decision to introduce this denomination stems from shifts in Ukraine’s economic landscape. Cash in circulation has surged from nearly 390 billion hryvnia in 2019 to over 970 billion hryvnia at the time of the announcement. Banknotes of 1000 hryvnia now account for more than 55% of the total value in circulation. Price levels have doubled since 2019, a key factor driving the move. The average monthly salary in May 2026 reached approximately 31,000 hryvnia, compared to about 10,333 hryvnia in 2019.
Pyshny noted that in 2019, ten of the highest-denomination banknotes sufficed to cover an average monthly salary. By 2026, that same salary requires over thirty 1000 hryvnia notes.
“The number of banknotes needed for cash transactions has also increased. So the decision for a 2000 hryvnia note is not based on a single indicator. It results from a combination of factors that have created an objective need to make cash handling more efficient,” said Andriy Pyshny.
In his speech, Pyshny stressed that the economy evolves constantly, and the banknote series must keep pace with those changes. He pointed out that “first came the coronavirus crisis. Since 2022, there has been a full-scale war. These shocks have placed unprecedented strain on public finances and altered many key metrics: incomes, price levels, and the volume and structure of cash in circulation.”
