Invasive Rabbitfish Spreading Across Greece's Seas

Marine experts are raising alarms over the rapid spread of the invasive rabbitfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus) in Greek waters. Originally native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species entered the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal. Scientists now rank it among the most problematic invasive species in the eastern Mediterranean due to its potential to disrupt local ecosystems.

Dangers and Safety Advice

The rabbitfish is equipped with four powerful teeth fused into a beak-like structure, allowing it to crush shells and slice through fishing nets. This makes it a threat to humans, as it can inflict serious injuries. Although bites are rare, they typically occur when people attempt to touch, feed, or catch these fish.

Furthermore, the rabbitfish can accumulate the potent neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, making it dangerous to eat. In response, specialists urge tourists to exercise caution and emphasize the importance of respecting marine life.

“The message for tourists is simple: enjoy the sea, observe marine fauna with respect, and avoid touching unfamiliar animals. Let's not forget that the sea is not a pool, but a complex and living ecosystem that we study with respect and caution.”

The rabbitfish's expansion in Greek seas poses serious risks to both local biodiversity and human safety. Invasive species like the rabbitfish can upset the natural balance, harming native fish populations and other marine organisms. It is crucial for both residents and visitors to follow expert recommendations in order to prevent negative health and environmental consequences.

As the rabbitfish invasion escalates, tourists are also cautioned about other dangers lurking in the Mediterranean. With rising temperatures reaching 44°C, visitors should be aware of the combined threats posed by aggressive marine life and extreme heat.
