Ukraine's NEC Ukrenergo Warns of Phishing Scam Using Fake Power Outage Schedules

УкрЕнерго розкриває шахрайські схеми, пов’язані з фальшивими графіками відключень електропостачання.

NEC Ukrenergo Issues Alert on Phishing Campaign

Ukraine's national power company, NEC Ukrenergo, is alerting the public to a new wave of phishing attacks. Cybercriminals are sending emails that falsely claim to be from the company, containing what they describe as updated electricity outage schedules. These emails originate from the address uaenergy@et-sy-newnews.com, which is not affiliated with Ukrenergo. To make the scam more convincing, the attackers place legitimate company email addresses, like office@ua.energy, in the CC field of the message.

Attachments in these fraudulent emails contain malicious software. Opening such a file can lead to the theft of passwords, banking details, and provide attackers with access to the victim's device. NEC Ukrenergo emphasizes that it never sends outage schedules via personal email messages or includes software for download in its communications. This warning was issued by the company's press service.

Consumer Safety Recommendations

To protect themselves from potential harm, NEC Ukrenergo urges all consumers to take the following steps:

  • Check for official information only on Ukrenergo's verified websites or the resources of regional power distribution companies (oblenergos).
  • If a suspicious file is accidentally opened, immediately scan the device with antivirus software.

This incident highlights the critical importance of cybersecurity vigilance, especially as reliance on digital communication grows. Such scams often increase during periods of infrastructure strain, aiming to exploit public concern. Consumers should be extremely cautious about the sources of information they interact with to avoid financial loss and protect their personal data. Official company channels remain the most reliable source for verified updates.
