The Bravery of Andrii Machulianskyi

Andrii Machulianskyi, call sign "Mak," served as a chief sergeant in Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR). He died in August 2023 during a combat mission deep behind enemy lines. Despite his extraordinary courage, the Netishyn city council initially hesitated to rename a street in his honor. After a draft decision to reject the proposal was made public, the council finally approved the measure on May 22 during a session, choosing to honor the hero's memory.

Machulianskyi perished in an unequal battle while covering his comrades' retreat. His unit had traveled over 600 kilometers through Russian territory, during which they destroyed enemy strategic aviation aircraft. For his valor, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine in 2023. He signed his first military contract in 2002 and served in peacekeeping missions in Iraq, Kuwait, and Liberia. He was also decorated with the Order for Courage.

Street Renaming

In 2024, Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate asked the Netishyn city council to name a street after the fallen soldier. However, the process dragged on for nearly two years. Some residents opposed the change due to concerns about updating property documents. Local authorities conducted a survey among residents, but Machulianskyi's comrades criticized it as flawed because of poor communication.

Notably, details of the operation in which Machulianskyi died are available on the HUR website. Despite all obstacles, the city council voted on May 22 to honor the Hero of Ukraine. The fallen soldier's wife, Oksana Machulianska, remarked:

"In reality, they gave the most precious thing—their lives. Changing documents right now is a very trivial matter."

Andrii Machulianskyi is the only Hero of Ukraine from Netishyn, and his memory will now be preserved in the name of a street in his hometown. Ivan Romaniuk, secretary of the Netishyn city council, confirmed that the renaming will be carried out to honor Machulianskyi's sacrifice and his contribution to defending the country.

Renaming the street after Andrii Machulianskyi marks a significant step in commemorating Ukraine's fallen defenders, who gave their lives for the nation's freedom and independence. This decision may help raise public awareness of the heroism of military personnel and their role in protecting the state. By honoring such heroes, society can strengthen national identity and patriotism among young people, as remembering the feats of defenders is a vital part of national history.

Similar to the recent decision by the Kyiv Council to honor local rescue heroes by renaming a park, the tribute to Andrii Machulianskyi reflects a growing recognition of those who sacrifice for their country. Such initiatives not only commemorate bravery but also foster community pride and remembrance.
