NHL Global Series Set for Germany
The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced that its Global Series will feature games in Germany this year. The Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks will face off in Düsseldorf on December 18 and 20, 2023. This initiative is part of the league's ongoing strategy to grow its international fanbase and showcase its talent globally.
This will mark the NHL's second visit to Germany. The league's first foray into Europe dates back to 1938. Since its founding, the NHL has actively cultivated international ties, with a notable event occurring in October 2011 when the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-2 in Berlin.
Expanding Hockey's Reach in Europe
Last year, the NHL Global Series was held in Sweden, where Stockholm hosted two games between the Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. These international tours are designed to promote hockey worldwide, attracting new fans and giving European sports enthusiasts a chance to see top-tier league action live.
Hosting NHL games in Germany underscores the sport's growing popularity in Europe and the league's commitment to international expansion. The Global Series allows European fans to experience NHL games without traveling to North America, potentially boosting the sport's profile across the continent. Such events also help foster youth hockey development in host countries, which could raise the game's overall skill level and inspire future generations of athletes in the long term.
