In the early hours of January 24, the city of Kharkiv was subjected to a mass attack by 'Shahed'-type drones. The assault resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential buildings, a dormitory, and medical facilities. The number of injured has now reached 19, including a 12-year-old boy who suffered an acute stress reaction. This attack is part of a sustained pattern of strikes on Ukraine's second-largest city, which lies near the Russian border.

Extent of the Damage

The strikes hit the Industrial and Nemyshlyanskyi districts of the city. In the Industrial district, a 4-story residential building and a multi-story building were struck. In the Nemyshlyanskyi district, a private house was damaged when a drone crashed into its yard. In total, approximately 13 private homes were damaged, along with:

  • a dormitory housing 48 internally displaced persons;
  • two medical institutions;
  • a road;
  • street lighting;
  • automobiles.

Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the impact sites to provide assistance and document the aftermath. In response to these events, investigative authorities have launched a pre-trial inquiry under Article 438 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which deals with war crimes. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed that the number of people injured in the overnight air attack has risen to 19.
