Missile Strike on Kyiv on October 26
In the early hours of October 26, Kyiv was hit by a Russian ballistic missile attack that caused significant damage to the Southern Bridge, metro infrastructure, and several buildings. Traffic on the Southern Bridge has been halted in both directions. Later that evening, the attack resulted in one death and left 14 people wounded.
Kiev’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that a 46-year-old woman died in the Desnianskyi district. Among the injured, 13 individuals aged between 19 and 59 were treated, including two emergency medical workers. Additionally, a 22-year-old man was wounded in the Obolonskyi district. Nine of those injured required hospitalization.
Impact on City Infrastructure
Damage was recorded across six districts, including Desnianskyi, Obolonskyi, and Podilskyi. The affected structures include:
- Multi-story residential and private houses
- Healthcare facilities
- A metro station
- A university dormitory
- A business center
- Trams and cars
In the Podilskyi district, the missile struck an administrative building and two non-residential structures. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the attack targeted the university grounds, the Kyoto Park, and areas near the metro station.
Regarding metro operations, the Red Line service has resumed between Akademmistechko and Lisova stations. However, the track section between Darnytsia and Chernihivska stations, along with exits at Lisova station, sustained damage. On the Green Line, service between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir is temporarily suspended, though trains continue to run between Syrets and Vydubychi stations.
Traffic congestion has increased on Kyiv’s left bank, with drivers advised to use the Darnytskyi Bridge as an alternative route. Bus routes 22 and 91 have been rerouted via this bridge, with an additional four buses added to each route. Route 22 will operate 14 buses, five of which will run a shortened path between Trostianetska Street and Lybidska metro station. Route 91 will have seven buses in service.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the strike on the Southern Bridge was aimed at disrupting its alleged use for transporting military cargo.
This attack highlights the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, severely affecting Kyiv’s civilian infrastructure and endangering residents’ safety. Given the extent of the destruction and number of casualties, prompt emergency response and infrastructure restoration are critical to maintaining the city’s functionality. Considering the Russian Defense Ministry’s statements, the security situation remains volatile, requiring heightened vigilance and preparedness from Ukrainian authorities against potential future threats.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of the missile strike, traffic on the Southern Bridge has begun to resume under certain restrictions. This development comes amid ongoing challenges for cross-river travel, highlighting the need for alternative routes.
