Nikopol Appeals to Commander Syrskyi for Urgent Air Defense Reinforcements Following Civilian Casualties

Нікополь закликає забезпечити термінове посилення повітряної оборони після втрат серед цивільного населення.

Appeal from the Nikopol Organization 'Prykhyst'

The Nikopol community organization 'Prykhyst' has issued an open appeal to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, demanding enhanced defenses for the city and its surrounding district. The region has endured relentless shelling since the summer of 2022, a grim reality that has escalated into a severe humanitarian crisis. Civilian casualties in the Nikopol community were significant in March and April 2026. Specifically, March saw 5 people killed and 52 wounded. The situation deteriorated sharply in the first week of April, with 10 fatalities and 89 injuries recorded.

The Situation in Nikopol

Russian forces have been shelling Nikopol from positions in Enerhodar, located on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River. Due to the worsening security situation in April 2026, temporary restrictions were imposed in the Nikopol district, including a ban on the operation of markets, bazaars, and all street trading from April 10 to 13.

“We, the community of Nikopol, have lived under shelling since the summer of 2022. Not a day. Not a week. Years. This is not a 'difficult situation.' It is the systematic destruction of a city and its inhabitants. Every day brings explosions, drones overhead, the wounded and the dead. People do not leave not because they have 'gotten used to it,' but because this is their home. And the state must either protect this home or honestly admit it cannot. We demand the immediate reinforcement of air defense in Nikopol and the Nikopol district, real protection from drones, and concrete actions to reduce civilian casualties.”

The appeal from 'Prykhyst' highlights the immediate problems faced by the local population and underscores the urgent need for state action to ensure security. This front-line city, situated across the river from occupied territory, is a frequent target for Russian artillery and drones. The regular attacks result in significant human losses and immense stress for residents, necessitating an adequate response from military and civilian authorities. Ignoring these pleas risks further escalation, leading to more casualties and heightened social tension in the region.

The dire situation in Nikopol has been further exacerbated by recent incidents, including a tragic drone strike that left four individuals dead. This underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region.
