New support package for Ukraine's power infrastructure
Ukraine’s Energy Support Fund is receiving roughly €250 million in additional financing from Germany. The money is being channelled via the KfW development bank on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Germany’s total contribution now stands at €807 million, making it the fund’s biggest backer. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry has confirmed that pledges from all donors have collectively exceeded €2.4 billion.
Kyiv thanks Berlin for continued help
Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal thanked Germany’s government and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katerina Reiche personally.
“This support is vital for making Ukraine’s energy system more resilient before the onset of winter,”he said. Shmyhal warned that because of Russia’s unrelenting strikes, Ukrainian energy companies still face serious shortages.
“We need to bring another €561.5 million into the fund and rely on our partners to keep helping us,”he added.
Earlier, more than 58 tonnes of power equipment sent by German allies were distributed through emergency energy aid hubs run by Ukraine’s Energy Ministry to critical infrastructure sites in Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zakarpattia, and Kirovohrad regions. This underlines the strong bilateral cooperation between Kyiv and Berlin in energy security at a time of war.
Germany’s larger financial engagement is a significant step toward maintaining the stability of Ukraine’s energy system, which has been badly shaken by hostilities. By remaining the fund’s largest donor, Berlin is sending a clear signal of solidarity with Ukraine during a particularly difficult period. The ongoing appeal for fresh money also shows just how much external assistance is still needed to keep Ukraine’s energy sector functioning through the challenges ahead.
In addition to Germany's substantial support, Luxembourg has also contributed €8 million to bolster Ukraine's energy sector. This collective effort from multiple nations highlights the ongoing commitment to enhance Ukraine's energy resilience amid ongoing challenges, further emphasizing the importance of international cooperation during this critical time.
