A Financial Boost for Ukraine’s World Natural Heritage
Germany is putting €10 million toward the defense of Ukraine’s World Natural Heritage sites. The funds will go toward creating a conservation action fund, maintaining natural-heritage management during the war, and developing it further. The primary aim is to protect the UNESCO site “Beech Primeval Forests of Europe.” Because this landscape is tied to a broader transnational UNESCO designation, the significance of this support extends well beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The plan was settled during a meeting between Oleksandr Kravchenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Economy and Environment, and Germany’s Federal Environment Minister, Carsten Schneider. Kravchenko said:
“We spent two days with the German government delegation turning our shared environmental priorities into concrete projects. I am grateful to the German side for being willing not just to talk about Ukraine’s green reconstruction, but to carry it out together.” Oleksandr Kravchenko
Within Ukraine lie forest tracts belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage property “Primeval Beech Forests and Ancient Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” The initiative highlights the value of international collaboration in preserving ecological assets and natural legacy.
The German pledge reflects solid support from international partners for protecting Ukraine’s environment, especially during wartime. Keeping these natural sites intact is essential not only for biodiversity but also for the nation’s cultural identity, since they are part of Europe’s shared inheritance. The project may also show other countries how to pursue environmental commitments even under crisis.
