Germany’s stance on its diplomatic mission in Ukraine

Germany has no plans to pull its diplomatic staff out of Kyiv in response to threats from Russia. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul confirmed this position, emphasizing that Berlin is in close coordination with other embassies and will not be intimidated.

“No, of course not. We are in close contact with other embassies. We will not let ourselves be intimidated by this. We know the Russians, and these are the tactics they use,” — Johann Wadephul.

Russia recently urged foreign nations to withdraw their diplomatic missions from Kyiv, signaling a continuation of its information war against Ukraine’s Western allies. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz may hold a phone call with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the future, a move that could influence the situation.

Announced ceasefire and diplomatic relations

Additionally, Russia has declared a unilateral ceasefire from 00:00 on May 8 to May 10, marking the 81st anniversary of the victory over Nazism. During this truce, Russian forces are expected to halt combat operations, including:

  • suspending missile strikes;
  • artillery fire;
  • precision-guided weapons;
  • pausing the use of attack drones against infrastructure targets of Ukraine’s defense industry and armed forces.

The European Union has confirmed it will not reduce its diplomatic presence in Kyiv, despite Russian threats to launch massive strikes on the capital on May 9.

The statements and actions of both sides reflect a complex political situation in the region that continues to draw international attention and concern. Germany’s position, along with that of other Western nations supporting Ukraine, underscores a willingness to resist Russian pressure and maintain diplomatic ties amid escalating tensions. This suggests the West intends to keep backing Ukraine in its fight against aggression, while potential diplomatic moves could emerge in the near future.
