The number of asylum applicants in Germany has sharply decreased. In the first half of this year, 65,495 applications were submitted, which is 43% less than in the same period in 2024. This information was published by the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing an internal report from the European Commission.
Germany now ranks second in the number of asylum applications, ceding leadership to Spain and France. In all EU countries, Norway, and Switzerland, 388,299 asylum applications were processed during this period, but this is 23% less than in 2024.
European Parliament member, migration expert Elena Dupont noted that the decline in asylum applications might be linked to partnership agreements with North African countries and strengthened cooperation with the border agency Frontex.
Increase in immigration through Libya
The European Union expresses concern over the new increase in immigration through Libya, noting a significant number of people trying to enter Europe from Sudan and South Sudan. EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner plans to hold negotiations in Libya on July 8 together with representatives from several Mediterranean EU countries.
