German Military to Acquire New Combat Drones
The German parliament's budget committee has authorized the Ministry of Defence to begin procuring thousands of loitering munitions, often referred to as 'kamikaze drones,' for the Bundeswehr. This decision, first reported by Die Welt and confirmed by 'Glavcom,' marks a significant modernization effort. The drones will be sourced from German startups Helsing and Stark Defence, supporting domestic defense technology.
While the initial program cost was estimated at around 540 million euros, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius initially sought parliamentary approval for orders worth up to 4.3 billion euros. The budget committee, however, has now set the total program ceiling at 2 billion euros. This move reflects Germany's ongoing reassessment of its defense posture in light of recent security challenges in Europe.
Parliamentary Oversight for Defense Contracts
To ensure oversight, legislators have mandated that the Ministry of Defence provide regular progress reports. Furthermore, deputies passed a directive requiring renewed parliamentary approval before any potential future expansion of the procurement. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius called the committee's approval 'a very important step.' The new drones are expected to be deployed with a Bundeswehr brigade stationed in Lithuania.
