Stark Defence's Autonomous Surface Vessel
German startup Stark Defence is set to launch a 24-meter autonomous surface vessel in 2027, designed specifically to safeguard underwater cables and monitor Russia’s so-called 'shadow fleet' operating in European waters. This unmanned ship will be capable of carrying up to 50 tons of cargo, including weaponry, and can reach speeds exceeding 64 km/h. Its primary area of operation will be the Baltic and North Seas.
Development and Advanced Capabilities
The project is being developed jointly in the UK and Germany. Founded in 2024, Stark Defence has already secured contracts with four NATO member nations, though their identities remain confidential. A key feature under development is an electronic warfare sensor capable of detecting transmitters and radars from distances up to 100 kilometers.
European officials are increasingly concerned about Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics, which include cyberattacks, drone incursions, and sabotage targeting critical infrastructure. The presence of hundreds of vessels linked to Moscow in Northern European waters has raised alarm across the region.
Uwe Horstmann, a representative of Stark Defence, emphasized: "These systems cost only a fraction of what a manned frigate requires, which can take years to build."
This highlights the strategic advantages of unmanned technology in today’s security environment. Stark Defence is advancing maritime technology that could become a crucial asset in countering emerging security threats in European seas.
The introduction of this unmanned vessel marks a significant step amid growing military and hybrid threats, underscoring the need for innovative security solutions in Europe’s maritime domain. Given the current geopolitical climate, such technologies have the potential to transform naval defense strategies and enhance rapid response capabilities against evolving dangers.
