Kidney Transplant for 15-Year-Old Andriy
In Lviv, doctors successfully performed a kidney transplant on 15-year-old Andriy, a patient originally from Kryvyi Rih. The boy’s father, a soldier, was initially set to be the donor, but medical exams revealed he had cancer. Another donor was then found. Andriy’s father is currently undergoing cancer treatment. The teenager is also awaiting brain surgery.
Andriy was born with a heart defect. At age 5, he was diagnosed with Chiari malformation, a congenital brain condition. At 14, he developed kidney failure, which led to a fractured femoral neck. To treat this, doctors used a stem cell bone fusion technique unique to Ukraine, which enabled Andriy to walk again.
The Story of Andriy’s Family
The patient’s mother, Natalia, recalled receiving the news about a donor:
‘You have 20 minutes to get ready! A kidney donor has been found for your son,’ she said of the phone call.
‘Within 20 minutes, we were in the car, dressed in whatever we had. We covered the 12-hour drive from Kryvyi Rih in one breath. Police stopped us twice, but when they learned we were racing to a transplant, they simply wished us luck and let us go,’ Natalia added.
Head of the transplant unit, Liliya Hrytskiv, noted:
‘This child is proof that even the most complex combination of diagnoses is not a death sentence if you set the right priorities and work as a team.’
