Recycled Phone Number Used for Crime

The mobile phone number once belonging to the late former Ukrainian MP Iryna Farion has been reactivated on Telegram, where a story from Pattaya, Thailand, was posted. This occurred because mobile operators routinely reassign inactive phone numbers to new customers. In Ukraine, numbers that remain unused for one to two years can be sold to other subscribers, a standard industry practice in many countries.

Iryna Farion sustained fatal injuries on the evening of July 19, 2024, in Lviv. Law enforcement officers detained 18-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko on July 25 on suspicion of committing the crime. The following day, on July 26, a court ordered him to be held in custody without the right to post bail. The suspect has been charged with intentional murder motivated by national intolerance and the illegal handling of a weapon.

Investigation Progress

As part of the pre-trial investigation, authorities conducted over 60 expert examinations and questioned more than 1,500 witnesses. The indictment, comprising 30 volumes, was submitted to the court on December 26, 2024. The substantive hearing of the case is currently ongoing. The incident has drawn significant public attention in Ukraine, highlighting the critical need to address hate crimes.

Farion's death became a high-profile event in Ukraine, sparking widespread public debate on the issue of national intolerance. The thorough investigation underscores the gravity of such crimes and their societal impact, as well as the paramount importance of justice in these cases. This tragedy has further emphasized the ongoing necessity of combating discrimination and violence based on national or ethnic origin.

The ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the murder of Iryna Farion continue to draw significant attention, with the accused recently initiating a hunger strike.
