Norway Proposes Temporary Ban on Smart Glasses with Cameras in Public Places

The Norwegian government is preparing to introduce legislation that would temporarily prohibit the use of smart glasses equipped with cameras in busy public areas. This measure is aimed at protecting citizens' privacy. The ban would apply to locations such as beaches, parks, large events, schools, swimming pools, healthcare facilities, and changing rooms.

As smart glasses with recording capabilities become increasingly accessible and widespread, concerns about privacy violations in public settings have intensified. Following the proposal’s submission, the government plans to establish an advisory committee to finalize the specifics of the restriction.

Global Precedents

Similar regulations have already been implemented in other parts of the world, including:

  • New York State, where wearing smart glasses in courtrooms is prohibited;
  • Hamburg, Germany, which bans these devices on public transportation and at public swimming pools.

Additionally, there is ongoing discussion about restricting non-camera smart glasses produced by the company Even Realities.

By taking these steps, Norway aligns itself with other nations actively addressing privacy challenges posed by emerging technologies.

This potential ban marks a significant development in privacy legislation amid rapid technological advancements. As smart glasses gain popularity worldwide, protecting individual privacy has become a pressing issue not only nationally but also on a global scale. Norway’s approach could serve as a valuable model for other countries striving to balance innovation with citizens’ rights.
