New program 2026: long-term medical care for severely injured defenders
In 2025, the results of medical support for defenders in Ukraine were summarized, including standard programs and special packages for veterans. The results indicate significant demand for medical services: over 100,000 patients utilized dental services, and 108,000 military personnel received free dental treatment and prosthetics. Therapeutic assistance was provided to 102,970 individuals, among which 25,693 underwent the procedure for dental prosthetics.
Moreover, more than 20,000 veterans took advantage of an expanded package of primary care services, particularly under the 'Family Doctor Plus' program. Starting from January 1, 2026, a resolution on long-term medical care came into effect. This innovation stipulates that the state will finance continuous medical, rehabilitation, and social support for patients who score less than 30 points on the Barthel scale.
The importance of long-term medical care
The Barthel scale is a tool for assessing the functional status of patients, allowing to determine their level of independence in daily life. The introduction of the new program emphasizes the importance of long-term medical care for severely injured defenders, providing them with the necessary support in the rehabilitation process and adaptation to new living conditions.
Long-term medical care is an important step in supporting veterans who have suffered serious injuries during service. This initiative not only improves their quality of life but also provides the necessary resources for rehabilitation and social integration.
Given the significant needs of veterans in Ukraine, the introduction of this program is an important milestone in the development of the medical care system for military personnel.
