The Evolving Nature of Combat in Ukraine
The battlefield in Ukraine has been fundamentally reshaped by the saturation of attack systems, particularly FPV drones. This has created severe new challenges for logistics and supply transport, as enemy forces actively target and sever supply lines. Consequently, Ukrainian troops are now frequently forced to carry supplies on foot over vast distances. This shift highlights the immense pressure drones exert on every aspect of modern warfare, forcing armies to revert to more primitive, manpower-intensive methods.
Junior Sergeant Serhiy Kutik notes that vehicles previously could drive right up to front-line positions, simplifying the delivery process.
"We used to drive right up to the edge. We could get almost to the position itself, drop off personnel, provisions, and supply the troops. In the current reality, vehicles often can't even reach the designated drop-off points,"he explains. This significantly complicates mission execution, as soldiers now face foot marches of 7 to 15 kilometers while laden with gear.
According to reports, it takes about six personnel to haul supplies to a position.
"For example, when you're carrying ammunition or food—you're moving 100 to 200 kilograms to the position in one go. To carry all that, you need about six men who will haul everything on their backs,"adds Sergeant Kutik. He emphasizes that with the proliferation of drones, logistics have become far more difficult, as "they started cutting off our supply chains." Previously, he says, electronic warfare provided some protection, but these countermeasures are now often ineffective against the drone threat.
Adapting to the New Reality
In this environment, Ukraine's 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade faces novel challenges that demand adaptation to the altered conditions of combat. Changes in logistics and delivery methods are critical factors impacting the overall effectiveness of military operations. The struggle to maintain supply lines under constant aerial surveillance is a central feature of the war's current phase.
The logistical shifts, driven by emerging threats like FPV drones, require Ukrainian forces to demonstrate flexibility and innovate rapidly. Ensuring frontline units are supplied amidst these challenges underscores the urgent need for new strategies in resource allocation and delivery. Successful adaptation to these harsh conditions is vital for the combat readiness and operational capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
