Card Blocking Triggers New Scam: How to Protect Your Finances

Нові шахрайські схеми на тлі блокування карт: як уберегти свої гроші.

Warning Issued Over Fraudulent Tactics

A warning has been issued for Ukrainians abroad concerning a scam that intensifies following the blocking of a bank card. Criminals are using messaging apps to make phone calls, posing as bank security personnel to trick victims into revealing confidential information.

Iryna Poliakova, a journalist for the publication 'Na Pensii', reported on this scheme, which has become particularly widespread due to the situation in the banking sector. The fraudsters call their victims, introducing themselves as bank security staff.

"A person with a pleasant voice on the other end of the line says: 'Good day, this is the bank's security service. We can see that your card has been blocked. For us to unblock it, please dictate the code that will now arrive in your SMS message,'"
Poliakova noted.

Expert Recommendations

It is worth noting that the scammers may also ask for the three digits on the back of the card, known as the CVV code. Iryna Poliakova emphasized that

"a real bank never, under any circumstances, asks for such data. They have all the necessary information in their computer system."
This is a crucial warning for all users of banking services.

Experts advise the following:

  • Resolve any card issues independently by initiating contact with your bank through its official app or verified contacts listed on its official website.
  • Immediately hang up on calls from unknown numbers requesting you dictate any codes to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activity.

This case underscores the importance of caution when communicating with unknown individuals, especially regarding financial matters. With the current economic climate leaving many facing financial strain, scammers are exploiting these circumstances to carry out their schemes. This type of fraud is a global issue, and awareness of the tactics can help people everywhere avoid losses and keep their money safe.
