Delivering Vital Rabies Immunoglobulin to Ukraine
Nova Ukraine, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, has contributed 1,000 vials of VINRAB rabies immunoglobulin to Ukraine, valued at nearly 1.8 million hryvnias. This medication is crucial for preventing rabies infections in situations with a high risk of exposure. The distribution of these immunoglobulin doses will be managed regionally based on demand, with oversight provided by the Ukrainian Public Health Center to ensure proper allocation and usage according to need.
When and How Rabies Immunoglobulin Is Used
Rabies immunoglobulin is administered in cases where there is significant danger of contracting rabies, such as severe or multiple animal bites, or bites located on sensitive areas like the head, neck, hands, or mucous membranes. Medical professionals determine the appropriate preventive treatment plan, which may involve vaccination alone or combined with immunoglobulin, depending on an individual risk assessment. It is important to note that the incidence of animal bite cases fluctuates throughout the year.
In the event of an animal bite, scratch, or saliva contamination, the following steps are recommended:
- Thoroughly wash the affected area with soap and water for at least 15 minutes.
- Apply an antiseptic or cover the wound with a sterile dressing.
- Seek immediate medical attention if bitten.
- Complete the full course of rabies vaccination as prescribed, adhering to the recommended schedule.
