Ukrainian Polar Expedition to Antarctica
In the early hours of February 25, 2026, a team of 14 Ukrainian polar researchers departed to conduct the annual crew rotation at the Akademik Vernadsky station in Antarctica. This mission marks a historic milestone for Ukraine, as it is the nation's first Antarctic expedition to be led by a woman, meteorologist Anzhelika Hanchuk. For the next year, the team will be based on Galindez Island, conducting vital research in geophysics, meteorology, and biology. Ukraine has maintained a continuous scientific presence in Antarctica since taking over the station in 1996.
The Journey to the Station
The expedition's journey to the remote outpost involves multiple stages. The team will first travel by bus to Warsaw, Poland, then fly to Punta Arenas in Chile. The final leg of their voyage will be aboard the icebreaker Noosfera. The expedition's diverse crew is composed of:
- 9 scientists
- a cook
- a doctor
- a systems administrator
- a diesel engineer
- a mechanic
A notable highlight for the Ukrainian polar community was the documented sighting of a king penguin, a rare visitor to the area around the Akademik Vernadsky station. This species typically resides thousands of kilometers from Galindez Island, underscoring the unique scientific opportunities of this expedition.
This mission represents a significant advancement for Ukraine in polar science and highlights the increasing role of women in leading scientific endeavors. Having a woman at the helm reflects broader societal and academic shifts toward greater gender equality in professional fields. The research conducted by the team is expected to contribute substantially to our understanding of Antarctic ecosystems and the broader impacts of global climate change.
