New Zealand Targets Russian Abduction Network With Latest Sanctions
Wellington has unveiled a fresh sanctions package against Russia—the 36th since the full-scale invasion began—blacklisting 33 people and entities. Those hit include actors linked to the forced relocation, deportation, and ideological re-education of Ukrainian children. The latest measures also take aim at Russian cyber operatives, creators and spreaders of anti-Ukrainian propaganda, officials in Russia's military-industrial complex, and political figures.
Who Is Affected by the Expanded Sanctions
The newly sanctioned list also includes citizens of North Korea and Iran who are supplying military assistance to Moscow. Since the start of the invasion, New Zealand has imposed restrictions on more than 2,000 individuals, companies, and vessels, in addition to enacting multiple trade bans.
"Children must never be treated as instruments of war. New Zealand is profoundly alarmed by the forced state programs designed to kidnap and reindoctrinate Ukrainian children."
This latest round forms part of New Zealand's broader effort to back Ukraine and denounce Russia's conduct in the ongoing war. As part of a wider Western push to isolate Moscow, it reflects the international drive to hold Russia accountable for violating global norms and to show solidarity with Kyiv.
