Kyiv Metro's Updated Regulations: Free Rides and Prohibited Items

Нові правила в київському метрополітені: безкоштовний проїзд та заборонені речі.

Rules for Using the Kyiv Metro

To enter the Kyiv Metro system, passengers must use contactless payment. This can be done with a PayPass-enabled bank card, a dedicated transport card, or a QR ticket purchased through the Kyiv Digital app or self-service terminals. A key requirement is that every passenger must carry an electronic ticket registered in the automated passenger accounting system. The regulations cover fare payment, categories eligible for free travel, and restrictions on luggage and animals.

Eligibility and Restrictions

Certain groups are entitled to free travel upon presenting valid documentation. These eligible categories include:

  • Parents with strollers;
  • Children under seven years old;
  • Visually impaired individuals accompanied by guide dogs;
  • Passengers with disabilities who use wheelchairs, crutches, or canes.

There are also strict baggage limits. Items are prohibited if the sum of their three dimensions (length, width, height) exceeds 200 centimeters. Additionally, the following are not permitted:

  • Long objects over 220 centimeters in length;
  • Rolls with a diameter over 15 centimeters and a length from 170 centimeters;
  • Any luggage on carts, except for classic suitcases and wheeled bags.

It is strictly forbidden to enter the platform with round objects lacking proper carrying means, gas or oxygen cylinders, or explosive, poisonous, or corrosive substances. These rules are standard for major metro systems to ensure passenger safety.

Regarding animals, cats, hamsters, rats, and birds are only allowed in closed cages or carriers where the sum of the three dimensions does not exceed 120 centimeters. Dogs measuring up to 45 centimeters at the shoulder may be carried in arms or a container. Larger dogs are not permitted in the metro. 'The only exception is for official guide dogs.' A service dog must wear a muzzle, a collar, and be on a short leash.

Adherence to these rules is crucial for ensuring the safety and comfort of all Kyiv Metro passengers. The regulations reflect an effort to accommodate diverse passenger needs while emphasizing modern, cashless payments. Clear restrictions on luggage and animals help prevent potential incidents and create convenient conditions for all users. Over time, these rules may be adapted in response to evolving social needs and technological progress.

As the Kyiv Metro implements these new regulations, passengers may also be affected by potential fare increases. Understanding the financial changes in public transport is crucial for commuters.
