Meeting Planned with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, has proposed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berehove for early June. This potential summit marks a significant moment in bilateral ties, with the primary focus being the status of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and the removal of restrictions on their rights that have persisted for over a decade. Magyar announced his initiative on his Facebook page following a discussion with Berehove's mayor, Zoltán Babjak.
Tisza Party's Election Victory
The Tisza Party secured a decisive win in Hungary's parliamentary elections, capturing 138 out of 199 seats and achieving a constitutional majority. Péter Magyar is set to become Hungary's new prime minister on May 9, succeeding Viktor Orbán, who had led the government since 2010. The elections, held on April 12, saw the Tisza Party defeat Orbán's Fidesz party. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already extended his congratulations to Magyar on the victory.
Announcing the proposed meeting, Magyar stated:
“Based on this, I am initiating a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in early June, symbolically in Berehove.”He emphasized that it is time for Ukraine to lift the rights restrictions that have been in place for over ten years and restore cultural, linguistic, administrative, and higher education rights to ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia.
“This is how we can help ensure that as many ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia return to their homeland after the war ends,”he added.
Volodymyr Zelensky has also expressed a positive outlook regarding the future meeting. He commented:
“I am confident there will be an opportunity, and we will meet with Hungary's new prime minister. The transition of power is underway, and clearly, after this, our diplomats will find a format for us to meet, talk, and figure out how to live properly.”The president underscored the importance of good neighborly relations between Ukrainians and Hungarians, expressing hope for mutually beneficial ties between the two peoples.
Overall, Péter Magyar's initiative to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky has the potential to be a pivotal step in improving Ukraine-Hungary relations, particularly regarding the protection of the Hungarian minority's rights in Ukraine. Given the political shift in Hungary, this meeting could help resolve long-standing disputes and foster greater mutual understanding between the two countries. It is crucial that both sides find common ground on minority rights and cultural issues, which could in turn contribute to regional stability.
As Hungary's new leadership prepares for this pivotal meeting, it is essential to consider the broader implications for regional diplomacy. Recent signals from Ukraine indicate a willingness to engage in discussions with Hungary's incoming premier, suggesting a constructive dialogue may be on the horizon.
