New Leadership for Ukraine's Judicial Council

A new membership and leadership team for Ukraine's Council of Judges (CoJ) has been elected by the Congress of Judges of Ukraine. The Council's new Chairman is Vitaliy Salikhov, a judge of the Kyiv Court of Appeal. Delegates at the congress voted to renew the Council's composition, electing 30 members in total. It was decided that two additional members will be elected at the next Congress of Judges of Ukraine.

Vitaliy Salikhov was the sole candidate proposed for the position of Chairman and was elected via secret ballot. The role of Deputy Chairman was filled by Volodymyr Sokolov, a judge of the Cassation Administrative Court within the Supreme Court. Tetiana Grebeniuk, a judge of the Kyiv Oblast Commercial Court, was elected as Secretary of the Council of Judges of Ukraine.

Appointments to the High Council of Justice

In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Maksym Saviuk and Vitaliy Makhinychuk as members of the High Council of Justice. These appointments are part of ongoing judicial reforms in Ukraine, which have been a key focus since the 2014 Revolution of Dignity.

The election of the new Judicial Council and the appointments to the High Council of Justice underscore the Ukrainian government's efforts to reform the judiciary. These steps are intended to bolster public trust in judicial institutions and safeguard judicial independence. Future actions, including the election of the remaining CoJ members, are expected to further influence the trajectory of justice sector reforms in the country.
