Large-Scale Labor Legislation Reform in Ukraine

Ukraine is preparing a large-scale reform of labor legislation, which includes a new Labor Code developed with the involvement of businesses and trade unions. The aim of this initiative is to update Soviet norms and bring them closer to European standards. Work on the new code has lasted nearly two years, and as stated by Deputy Minister of Economy Daria Marchak, the main objective of the reform is to establish clear and transparent conditions for all market participants.

Main Changes in the New Labor Code

The introduction of the new Labor Code envisages nine types of labor contracts, which will allow for greater flexibility in labor relations. In particular, the duration of annual paid leave is proposed to be increased from 24 to 28 calendar days, and parents will be able to apply for leave to care for a child. This innovation is aimed at improving working conditions and ensuring a balance between work and family obligations.

There are also plans to review the allowable annual limit for overtime work upwards, which could affect the working hours of employees. Additionally, the minimum wage is planned to be calculated based on clear hourly and monthly formulas. These changes will undoubtedly contribute to improving working conditions in Ukraine and harmonizing labor legislation with European standards.

The reform of labor legislation in Ukraine is an important step towards modernizing the labor market and improving working conditions for employees. In particular, the new Labor Code aims not only to enhance legal regulation but also to adapt to the current demands of the economy. This may positively impact the investment climate in Ukraine, as clear rules of the game will ensure greater stability and predictability for businesses.
