The National Health Service of Ukraine uncovered facts of abuse by medical institutions amounting to more than 1 billion hryvnias. According to NHSU head Natalia Husak, violations of reporting rules for surgical operations resulted in significant financial losses totaling 2 billion hryvnias.

Automated monitoring of operations showed that hospitals attempted to inflate or deflate the cost of operations by entering inaccurate data into the healthcare system. Among the most common methods of fraud were substitution of operation codes and the addition of non-existent medical interventions.

'In total, this will be a reallocation of 2 billion UAH over the course of the year. These are funds that we can transfer to the same surgical assistance system, but strengthen those medical institutions that provide medical assistance to servicemen and enhance the trauma direction,' explained Husak.

To prevent such situations in the future, NHSU has taken a number of measures, including implementing a control system that will help detect any manipulations with medical records. Violations were identified in more than 600 institutions out of 647 checked, and now a budget recalculation of a larger amount is being conducted.

This news indicates serious problems in the field of medical assistance in Ukraine, but also shows the National Health Service's activity in uncovering and preventing financial abuses in medical institutions.
