NVIDIA Introduces New Liquid Cooling Solution for Data Centers
On July 21 at 12:30 PM, NVIDIA announced a novel liquid cooling system designed for data centers. This innovation utilizes water at temperatures as high as 45°C to efficiently dissipate heat from servers running artificial intelligence workloads. By adopting this system, operators can largely eliminate the need for conventional chillers for most of the year, leading to substantial savings in electricity and water consumption, reduced noise levels, and the ability to pack more hardware into the same data center footprint.
After circulating through the equipment, the water temperature rises to about 55°C. For every degree the coolant temperature increases, cooling energy costs drop by roughly 4%. In a 50-megawatt data center, this could translate into annual savings of approximately $4 million. It is also worth noting that traditional cooling setups using cooling towers consume around 9.8 million cubic meters of water per megawatt of capacity each year.
Key Benefits of the New System
This new liquid cooling system occupies only 2 mounting modules in a server rack, whereas classic solutions typically require 6 modules. This significant reduction in space requirements could be a game-changer for optimizing data center operations. The announcement was covered by Engadget.
