Prisoner Exchange in Ukraine

A major prisoner exchange took place in Ukraine on April 11, 2026, securing the release of a large group of Ukrainians from Russian captivity. Most of those freed had been held since the early stages of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Among the returnees are 28 officers, all of whom had also been imprisoned since 2022. The oldest released serviceman is 63 years old, while the youngest is 21.

Journalist Dmytro Karpenko published a video showing one of the freed soldiers calling his family. In the conversation, he expresses a longing for home-cooked food:

"Grandma, please bake me some homemade flatbreads and cookies. I really want your pampushky — the Ukrainian defender."

Composition of the Freed and Humanitarian Policy

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War also reported that 12 Ukrainians, whose fate was previously unknown, remain in captivity. The group of those released includes personnel from:

  • military units that defended Ukraine on the most intense sections of the front line;
  • civilians;
  • representatives of the National Guard;
  • the State Border Guard Service;
  • the Armed Forces;
  • territorial defense forces;
  • air assault, motorized infantry, and mechanized troops.

This exchange marks a significant step in the state's humanitarian policy, reflecting ongoing efforts to repatriate Ukrainian citizens from captivity. The continued imprisonment of the 12 Ukrainians underscores the protracted nature of the conflict and the necessity for further negotiations to secure their return. Such exchanges are critical for military and civilian morale, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing armed conflict.

The recent release of 28 officers highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many Ukrainians still in captivity. Following the exchange, interviews with the freed individuals have revealed new insights into the plight of those remaining behind bars. This has led to the identification of 12 additional Ukrainians whose current status is unknown. For more on this development, see the latest updates on the situation of captives.
