Ukraine's Security Chief Reveals Figures and Pledges Progress on Prisoner Exchanges with Russia

Глава безпеки України поділився даними та обіцяв поліпшення в процесі обміну полоненими з Росією.

Prisoner of War Exchanges with Russia

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Secretary, Rustem Umerov, has stated that work on prisoner exchanges with Russia is ongoing and results can be expected soon. He noted this activity has been continuous since 2022. However, the process of returning Ukrainian defenders from captivity is currently stalled due to an initiative from Moscow.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also asserted that Russia is blocking the humanitarian track, which complicates the exchange situation. According to the Coordination Headquarters:

  • The total number of Russian military personnel captured since the full-scale invasion exceeds 10,000.
  • On average, between 60 and 90 occupiers surrender each week, indicating a continuous flow of new prisoners.
Rustem Umerov emphasized that 'you will hear certain results in the near future.'

The situation regarding prisoner exchanges remains tense as Russia continues to block the processes, hindering the return of Ukrainian defenders. A critical component is the effort by the Ukrainian side to restore dialogue and find pathways for repatriation. Given the significant number of Russian troops in captivity, future steps could substantially impact the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and the broader state of relations. Prisoner swaps are a highly sensitive issue in the ongoing conflict, closely watched by international observers and the families of those detained.
