On February 24, 2022, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, the National Bank imposed currency restrictions to stabilize the country's financial system during the war.

Currency purchases

In December 2023, the NBU completely lifted restrictions on the purchase of foreign currency. Now Ukrainians can freely buy foreign currency at banks without restrictions, provided there is currency available in the bank's cash register.

However, restrictions on cash withdrawals remain:

  • At bank tellers: you can withdraw a maximum of 100,000 hryvnias per day only once a day.

  • At ATMs and POS terminals: daily limit - 50,000 hryvnias.

Gradual relief

Currency restrictions were introduced in stages and were gradually lifted as the situation stabilized. Lifting the limits on currency purchases was an important step towards restoring the normal functioning of the currency market.

Despite this, the NBU continues to control cash circulation to ensure financial stability in wartime.

The Ukrainian National Bank has eased currency restrictions, allowing citizens to freely buy foreign currency, but has maintained restrictions on cash withdrawals to support financial stability during the war.
