Six Dead and 42 Wounded in One Day: Russia’s Assault on Sumy Region

Смертельні наслідки: 6 загиблих та 42 поранених внаслідок наступу Росії на Сумщині.

Sumy Region Under Fire

Over the past 24 hours, Russian strikes on Ukraine’s Sumy region have killed six people—five of them within the Sumy community—and wounded 42 others, including four children. The attacks hit 13 different communities across the region, signaling a severe escalation of violence in the area. This latest wave of aggression underscores the ongoing danger faced by civilians in northeastern Ukraine.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the Sumy community, where guided aerial bombs (KABs) caused multiple fatalities:

  • A 13-year-old girl
  • Men aged 27 to 67

Among the 42 wounded were:

  • A newborn baby girl
  • Girls aged 10 and 12
  • A 13-year-old boy
  • Women aged 18 to 80
  • Men aged 20 to 87

Casualties were also reported in two other communities. In Seredyna-Buda, two women—aged 45 and 66—were injured by a drone strike. In Esman, a 46-year-old man was killed after stepping on an explosive device, and a 53-year-old man was wounded in a separate drone attack. On the evening of July 11, Russian forces struck the center of Sumy with guided bombs, hitting a road and a public transport stop. These incidents highlight the growing threat to civilians in the region.

These attacks underscore the deteriorating security situation in Sumy Oblast, where ordinary people are increasingly caught in the crossfire. The surge in violence demands urgent action to protect residents and provide support to the wounded and bereaved.

Local authorities and international organizations may need to step up efforts to safeguard the population and deliver humanitarian aid.

The recent escalation of violence in Sumy is not an isolated incident. Just days before, a similar attack resulted in the deaths of three individuals in a civilian area, further highlighting the perilous situation for the local population.
