Obolonskyi District Prosecutor's Office Cases
The prosecutors from Kyiv’s Obolonskyi District have formally charged the head of the local Ukrainian Red Cross branch and one of its volunteers. They face accusations of orchestrating the illegal border crossing of a military conscript and facilitating the acceptance of a $20,000 bribe.
According to the investigation, the accused promised to secure fake employment as a way to exempt the conscript from mobilization and enable his departure from Ukraine. Initially, they planned to register the man as the beneficial owner of a company classified as critically important. However, since ownership status did not guarantee unrestricted exit from the country, the scheme was altered. Ultimately, the man was fictitiously employed by a critical enterprise to obtain official mobilization exemption.
Arrest and Case Developments
The suspects were apprehended in August 2026 while receiving the $20,000 payment. The investigation has concluded, and the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office has publicly released details of the case.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges related to illegal departures during military mobilization, a pressing issue amid the current conflict. The exploitation of volunteer organizations like the Red Cross undermines public trust and damages their reputations. The upcoming trial could play a key role in reinforcing laws against corruption and crimes connected to conscription procedures in Ukraine.
