Senior SBU Officials Removed Following Corruption Investigation
Alexander Poklad, the head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), has terminated the positions of two high-ranking officials implicated in the National Anti-Corruption Bureau’s (NABU) ongoing investigation known as Operation 'Carthage.' This action follows the uncovering of a criminal network that includes members of various law enforcement agencies.
The SBU is fully cooperating with prosecutorial authorities and supporting investigative procedures connected to the case. NABU previously exposed this criminal group, which was involved in shielding illicit enterprises, orchestrating violent assaults, and carrying out kidnappings. The mastermind behind these activities is a repeat offender. The organization’s membership spans current senior officials from the SBU, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the National Police, as well as figures from the criminal underworld.
Criminal Operations and Network Activities
This illegal syndicate operated fraudulent call centers deceiving both Ukrainian citizens and foreigners. Their activities also included:
- drug trafficking;
- illegal manufacturing of counterfeit cigarettes;
- circulation of forged foreign currency.
The group orchestrated planned attacks, kidnappings, and inflicted physical harm. At least twelve individuals were involved, notably including 'Akim,' an SBU Major General who provided protection from internal scrutiny within the agency.
Poklad emphasized: "The Security Service expects a transparent, impartial, and thorough investigation. I have discussed this directly with the heads of NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP)."
The exposure of a criminal network comprising law enforcement officials highlights the persistent challenge of corruption within Ukraine’s institutions. The dismissal of SBU officials signals a serious governmental effort to purge corrupt elements and rebuild public trust. Effective collaboration between NABU, other Ukrainian law enforcement bodies, and international partners will be crucial for advancing the investigation and ensuring accountability.
The recent actions taken by Alexander Poklad underscore the ongoing fight against corruption within Ukraine's law enforcement agencies. For further insights into the implications of these dismissals and additional context surrounding the NABU's investigation, it is essential to understand the broader impact on the integrity of these institutions.
