An elderly couple from Odesa has claimed the top prize in the Loto Zabava lottery after spending just 30 hryvnias (roughly $1) on their ticket. The winnings amount to 1 million hryvnias. The pair plans to use the money to repair their roof, which was damaged by a rocket attack on the city.
An Unexpected Stroke of Luck
The husband, who has been buying lottery tickets regularly for twenty years, changed his usual approach this time on the advice of a shop assistant named Lyubov Petrivna. Instead of his typical two tickets costing 25 hryvnias each, he purchased two tickets at 30 hryvnias apiece. Grabbing one of the tickets at random, he initially failed to realize he had won. He counted only two winning horizontal lines, but his granddaughter stepped in to help and spotted a third winning line.
“He only found two lines in that one. Then the granddaughter came over and said, ‘Grandpa, let me take a look.’ She looked and found the third,” shared Nellya Vasylivna.
During one of the attacks on Odesa, a rocket exploded near their home, sending a fragment through the roof and leaving a large hole along with numerous small damages. The family intends to direct the prize money toward urgent household repairs stemming from Russian aggression.
“Hope is the last to die,” remarked the husband, emphasizing the importance of believing in luck.
The Odesa retirees are the 437th millionaires in the history of the Loto Zabava lottery, operated by MSL. Following news of their win, locals have shown a surge of interest in the lottery, with many rushing to buy 30-hryvnia tickets.
