Odessa Theater Cancels Student Premiere Amid Quality Dispute

Суперечка про якість призвела до скасування прем'єри для студентів в Одеському театрі.

Premiere of 'Myna Mazaylo' Canceled

In late April 2026, the Odessa Regional Academic Drama Theater called off the premiere of "Myna Mazaylo," a play based on the work by Mykola Kulish. The production was being developed by fourth-year directing students from the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary University of Theater, Film and Television. The conflict erupted after theater management—particularly director Olena Shramko-Pushkina—criticized both the choice of the play and its execution. The students claim that prior agreements were violated and that they faced pressure, while the theater administration argues that the production lacked sufficient quality and did not align with their repertoire policy.

Circumstances Surrounding Rehearsals

The Odessa Regional Academic Drama Theater dropped the word "Russian" from its name in 2022. In the summer of 2025, the students struck a deal with director Olena Shramko-Pushkina to stage "Myna Mazaylo." The directorial concept was approved, and an official order to begin rehearsals was issued on March 17, 2026, with the premiere set for April 24, 2026. However, rehearsals—scheduled to start on January 10, 2026—were repeatedly postponed. In the end, the team managed only 23 sessions lasting between two and six hours, far short of the optimal 68.

The cast was meant to include actors from the Odessa Regional Drama Theater company. Two weeks before the premiere, an open rehearsal took place in the presence of the director; later that evening, the actors informed the students that the premiere was canceled. On April 21, 2026, the students presented their work to the theater’s artistic council, which includes:

  • People’s Artist of Ukraine Oleg Shkolnyk,
  • Honored Artists of Ukraine Hennadii Skarha and Serhii Poliakov,
  • Head of the Literary and Dramaturgical Department Maryna Izosimova,
  • Troupe Manager Nelli Churan.

After discussions, the theater issued a formal rejection, stating that "the performance is not recommended for the repertoire." Four actors refused to perform in the show.

Student Andrii Hryshyn expressed outrage, noting, "We prepared the directorial concept, and Olena Shramko-Pushkina approved it." He emphasized that according to the official order, rehearsals began on schedule and the premiere was set for April 24. However, after the open rehearsal, the director’s behavior became erratic: first she denied any cancellation, and then, according to Hryshyn, "she shouted, 'I promised you, the show will go on.'"

Theater management, led by Olena Shramko-Pushkina, maintains that the production was subpar. She stated, "What has been done with the play does not sufficiently meet the demands of our time" and that "the performance does not align with our repertoire policy." Shramko-Pushkina added, "The students created their diploma project, but that is not enough for the theater’s repertoire."

This situation has sparked significant discussion in theatrical circles, especially since the Odessa Theater for Young Spectators had already staged its own version of "Myna Mazaylo" earlier in 2026. It raises questions about what steps the students will take next and whether they can realize their creative ambitions amid such conflict.

The cancellation of the "Myna Mazaylo" premiere highlights the fraught relationship between emerging artists and theater leadership, which could impact the students’ future careers. As the theater world undergoes cultural shifts, this case underscores the need to support fresh ideas and artistic experimentation. The events surrounding the production may well become a catalyst for broader debates about the role of young talent in the country’s theatrical landscape.
