Official Investigation at Odessa National University

Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University has initiated a formal disciplinary investigation into Alexander Muzyczko, a Doctor of Historical Sciences and lecturer in the Department of Ukrainian History. The probe was triggered by his public statements on social media, including comments about the late actor from 'Mask Show,' Volodymyr Komarov, as well as criticism of Odessa and calls for the dismantling of monuments.

The investigation follows numerous public appeals and significant public outcry regarding the lecturer's systematic public pronouncements. The university administration launched the inquiry to verify the facts presented in these appeals. Alexander Muzyczko has previously advocated for the removal of monuments to Richelieu, Vorontsov, and Pushkin in Odessa, and even suggested the demolition of the Taras Shevchenko monument, arguing it was erected during the Soviet era.

Public Demands and Reaction

Fevzi Mamutov, a deputy of the Odessa Regional Council, initiated a letter to the university rector demanding Muzyczko's dismissal. He stated:

“It pains me to see how young people look at him at public events and absorb his moods. Personally, I have many people in my circle of communication in the Armed Forces of Ukraine who speak Russian. And when he insults them, that was one thing—the military might answer him. But when a person has died, and a person dear to this Odessa—that is absolutely unacceptable.” - Fevzi Mamutov

A special commission has been created to provide an ethical and legal assessment of the historian's publications. Alexander Muzyczko's social media account has been blocked. In his statements, he self-critically noted: 'All my activity has been known for many years. It is vividly nationalistic, decolonial. My opponents are also known. Now let everyone draw conclusions based on their worldview. Our society is clearly split into two camps: Ukrainian and Russian.' This case highlights the intense and ongoing debates over national identity and historical memory in Ukraine.

Recall that last week, 'Glavcom' reported on a scandal at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv concerning Rector Volodymyr Bugrov, where a protest action against his activities was also ongoing. The Ministry of Education and Science created a commission to inspect Bugrov's activities. The situation at Odessa National University reflects a broader societal resonance concerning public statements by educators and their influence on society.

The investigation into Alexander Muzyczko's activities underscores the importance of ethics in the academic environment and the impact of public statements on society. Given the high level of public resonance, the situation at the university could become a catalyst for a wider discussion about the role of educators in shaping public opinion and the need to adhere to ethical norms in their activities. This issue remains relevant in the context of modern social and political challenges in Ukraine.

As the investigation into Alexander Muzyczko unfolds, it highlights the broader issues surrounding freedom of expression and accountability in academia. This situation mirrors the recent controversies involving other educators, such as linguist Avramenko, who faced public scrutiny over his actions.
