Cucumber Prices Fall and Carrot Prices Rise in Ukraine
Ukraine is currently seeing a decline in the cost of greenhouse cucumbers, alongside an increase in carrot prices due to dwindling stockpiles. Additionally, greenhouse tomato prices have also dropped. As of now, wholesale cucumber prices range from 30 to 60 UAH per kilogram (0.68 to 1.37 USD per kg), which is 20% cheaper than at the end of the last workweek. Compared to the same period last year, cucumber prices are also lower.
Reasons Behind the Shifts in the Vegetable Market
The main driver behind the falling cucumber prices is a seasonal rise in supply against a backdrop of weak demand. Consistent harvests on farms and a steady increase in market volumes have shaped current pricing. Despite ample product availability, sluggish demand has led to reduced buyer activity compared to the previous week. Competition also plays a key role, as more produce from summer greenhouses enters the market, prompting large agricultural complexes to revise their prices downward. Producers do not rule out the possibility of further price decreases for cucumbers.
At the same time, prices for last year's carrot harvest have gone up in Ukraine, now selling for 9 to 16 UAH per kilogram. This marks a 22% increase from the end of last week. The primary reason for this rise is the depletion of stored supplies.
- Cucumber prices: 30-60 UAH per kg;
- Carrot prices: 9-16 UAH per kg;
- Tomato prices: 130-160 UAH per kg.
Furthermore, wholesale prices for greenhouse tomatoes have dropped by an average of 10% compared to the end of the previous workweek. As a result, Ukraine's vegetable market is showing mixed trends: on one hand, cucumber and tomato prices are falling, while on the other, carrot prices are climbing.
These market shifts may indicate a return to seasonal fluctuations, which is typical for the agricultural sector.
The decline in cucumber and tomato prices points to a surplus of produce, whereas the rise in carrot prices likely stems from insufficient supply. In this volatile market environment, both producers and consumers must adapt to new pricing realities that could influence their purchasing and sales decisions.
As the vegetable market in Ukraine experiences fluctuating prices, it's interesting to note that cabbage has recently entered the market at a significantly lower price compared to last year. This trend highlights the complex dynamics affecting supply and demand across various produce categories, making it essential for consumers and retailers to stay informed about ongoing market changes.
