For the First Time, Ocean Researchers Release Video of a Remarkable Deep-Sea Fish

Marvel of the Twilight Zone

The Schmidt Ocean Institute announced at 11 p.m. on August 16 the release of historic footage showing a Winteria telescopa, marking the first time this species has been captured on film. The deep-sea fish, which belongs to the Opisthoproctidae family, was recorded in the Atlantic Ocean's twilight zone at a depth of 710 meters. Known as the binocular fish or the ghost fish for its jelly-like face, Winteria telescopa has a translucent, gelatinous head and tubular, barrel-shaped eyes that are aligned parallel to each other along its body.

Expedition and Discovery

The video was taken by the remotely operated underwater vehicle SuBastian during an expedition in the central Atlantic, roughly 1,290 kilometers off the northeastern coast of Brazil. While Winteria telescopa can descend to depths between 400 and 2,500 meters, researchers previously had only examined damaged specimens that ended up in fishing nets.

During the same expedition, the team also observed two Magnapinna bigfin squids, which are recognized by their long, thread-like tentacles that can reach 8 meters in length. Alongside these biological observations, the scientists mapped nearly 147 square kilometers of the seafloor at a resolution of 1 meter and discovered two new fields of hydrothermal vents.

This expedition represents an important step forward in deep-sea research, offering access to rare species that were previously out of reach for scientific study. Insights from fish like Winteria telescopa could improve our understanding of how marine life adapts to extreme deep-ocean environments, while the newly located hydrothermal vent fields may shape future exploration in ocean biology and ecology. Such direct observations are essential for unraveling the mysteries of one of Earth's least-explored habitats.
