The head of the Freedom party Oleg Tyahnybok warned about the arrival of locusts in the Zaporizhzhia region. 'Two invasions of locusts are approaching Cossack Zaporizhzhia: 'Locusta migratoria' and 'common marsh locust'... Death to pests!', he stated.
Spread of locusts in Ukraine
In June and July, an increased spread of locusts was recorded in several regions of the country, particularly in Kherson region, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa region, Vinnytsia region and Dnipropetrovsk region.
Biologist Viktor Brygadyrenko explained why locusts are becoming more widespread in Ukraine. 'The locust has a clear annual cycle of development. In our climate zone, it survives the winter in the form of a hibernating nymph. One female locust lays about five such hibernating nymphs in clay soils. This means that the next year, 400 times more new locust specimens should emerge,' the scientist explained.
In normal years, when there is no drought, most locust eggs are affected by either insects, fungi, or viruses. Out of 400, only a dozen or two survive. They gradually thin out the clay, and the number of locusts remains stable,' said Brygadyrenko.
We remind you that an invasion of locusts has also been recorded in the village of Malokaterynivka in the Kushuhum community of Zaporizhzhia region.
The Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia is facing the problem of locust invasions, which can have serious consequences for agriculture and the ecology of the region. Scientists explain that this is related to the breeding characteristics of this insect and the impact of negative factors such as drought on its population. Measures must be taken to control and regulate the number of locusts to prevent further spread and avoid possible losses from its invasion.
