Alexander Volodymyrovych Palladin
Alexander Volodymyrovych Palladin (1885–1972) was a distinguished Ukrainian biochemist and public figure who played a pivotal role in advancing the national field of biochemistry. He established the Ukrainian scientific school focused on vitamin biochemistry and neurochemistry and served as the director of the Institute of Biochemistry at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1925 until 1969. His research spanned muscle biochemistry and the vital function of vitamins in human and animal nutrition. Palladin authored approximately 70 books and 600 scientific articles, with some of his earliest studies concentrating on creatine.
Scientific Career and Legacy
Born on September 10, 1885, in Moscow and passing away on December 6, 1972, in Kyiv, Palladin became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1942. He also joined the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in 1944. Between 1946 and 1962, he held the prestigious position of president of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Throughout his career, Palladin received numerous honors, including the Lenin Prize in 1929, the title of Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1935, and the Hero of Socialist Labor award in 1955.
During World War II, Palladin successfully developed the synthesis of vikasol, a water-soluble analogue of vitamin K3, which was significant for addressing vitamin deficiencies. Together with his students, he conducted extensive research on avitaminosis and the metabolic consequences of vitamin shortages. Beyond Ukraine, he was recognized as an honorary member of the scientific academies of Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Poland. His groundbreaking contributions have left an enduring mark on the history of biochemistry.
