Public Reaction to the Interview with the Showman

Ukrainian TV presenter and showman Alexander Pedan explained in 2023, during a conversation with the publication 'Grunt', the reasons why he did not join the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This explanation provoked a wave of outrage on social media, especially on Threads, where there were many critical reviews and memes. Such public statements by celebrities during wartime often become a basis for sharp public discussions about duty and opportunities.

42-year-old Pedan, who has an economic education and intends to obtain a diploma in public administration, stated in the interview:

'You know, when you come to us, communicate and lift the fighting spirit — that’s much more important than if you were here digging trenches with us.' - Alexander Pedan
The showman also shared his feelings: 'I did not go to fight, and this is my pain. As a man, I constantly thought about where I was needed more: here or there. I wanted to go, I have my health, I know how to run, I know how to shoot. The main thing is, I asked the military, and they said...'.

Criticism from Users and Military Personnel

The reaction on social media was predominantly negative. Many commentators pointed out that ordinary people often do not have the choice that a public figure has. One user wrote:

'Pedan, as a serviceman, I invite you to the army! You are needed! Then you will finally feel like a 'man'.' - Commentator
Others believed he should have remained silent: 'He has a choice — to go or not to go. But ordinary people do not have that. It would have been better if he had kept quiet.'

Reviews from military personnel also indicate a strong negative effect from Pedan's words.

  • 'My guys, when they watched the story with this Pedan, we all cried together. In the marine corps, two battalions could not calm down until morning. The tankers are depressed,' noted one soldier.
  • 'Now everyone will start saying that the military told them not to go. Beautiful, nothing else to say,' emphasized another commentator.

Alexander's wife, Inna Pedan, supported his decision and also plans to enroll in the same university. However, despite the support of close ones, the showman's statements caused serious public outrage, revealing deep social rifts and heightened emotions amid the war.

This story vividly demonstrates the tension in society caused by differing perceptions of military service during the conflict. While many Ukrainians are forced to go to the front, public statements by media figures can evoke especially painful resonance. Pedan's words became a catalyst for a wide discussion about patriotism, duty, and the role of celebrities in times of crisis.
