Family Ties Across Borders: Olha Sumska’s Story
Ukraine’s People’s Artist, Olha Sumska, remains in contact with her eldest daughter, Antonina Paperna, who currently lives in Moscow. While pursuing a career in Russian cinema, Antonina has remained silent about the war in Ukraine. Although Sumska cannot meet her daughter in Europe, she continues to communicate with her and see her grandchildren through video calls. Interestingly, Antonina’s children address Sumska by her first name rather than calling her grandmother.
Antonina Paperna’s Life and Career
Antonina Paperna is married to Russian actor Volodymyr Yahlych, and the couple has two children. In 2015, she graduated from the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in Moscow. Since then, she has worked at the First Studio of the Vakhtangov Theatre and appeared in Russian TV series, including 'Your Home' and the four-part melodrama 'Cold Dish.'
“How could a mother not stay in touch with her children? There may be such cases, but not in ours. She is my own flesh and blood. Children grow up. I wish them health, inspiration, and resilience.” — Olha Sumska
Sumska also noted that Antonina’s children bear a strong resemblance to her first husband, Yevhen, but acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. “It’s a tough situation,” she added.
In addition to her older daughter Antonina, Sumska has a younger daughter, Hanna Borysiuk, who has also spoken about her relationship with her sister. Despite the geopolitical tensions that make in-person meetings impossible, the family continues to stay connected.
This situation highlights the complex family dynamics that can arise amid geopolitical conflicts. Despite the physical distance and differing perspectives, Olha Sumska demonstrates the enduring importance of family bonds during times of crisis. The ongoing interaction among family members reflects their commitment to supporting one another, even when circumstances prevent them from being together in person.
